The Baudelaires have found yet another guardian -- the mysterious owner of the Lucky Smells Lumber Mill in the town of Paltryville. The luckless trio of Violet, Klaus and Sunny are convinced that this home will be no better than any of the others they've had since their parents' tragic deaths. They couldn't be more correct. In the other books, there was at least a sympathetic guardian who was hideously dispatched by the obsessive Count Olaf who covets the Baudelaire's fortune. The Miserable Mill , however, has only Phil, the relentlessly optimistic mill worker and Charles, the well-meaning but ineffectual partner of Sir, the mill owner who for no reason has a cloud of cigar smoke in place of a head. The idea of children toiling in a dangerous lumber mill is not the laugh-riot you might think and the villains are even more transparent than ever. The macabre optometrist/hypnotist Dr. Georgina Orwell (a meaningless reference) has no motivation for her misdeeds, but meets a suitably gory end and the ever-present Olaf is cross-dressing this time, insisting that a wig, false high voice and nameplate qualify him as Shirley, the optometrist's receptionist. These books might be subtitled "Why won't adults listen to kids?" and will find many sympathetic readers. They are not, however, for the squeamish -- reminiscent of Roald Dahl in The Witches. I hated book one when I started it, but was captivated by the appeal of the children themselves, and by the author's wonderful style, which manages to shield the reader from the full impact of the horrid happenings. This time they are sent to live in the Luckysmells Lumbermill. Klaus gets hypontized and almost kills his boss's asstant.But that's nothing compared to how Count Olaf disguizes himself..... as a girl!! A responist named Shirley. If you have read the other three books in this series then you must know how exciting this next book will be. I highly recommand this book to any person who loves adventure and bravery. I can tell you one thing with this book you are in for know dissapointment. 3. Klaus gets hypnotised, causing horrible accidents; Sunny has a sword fight and they are all forced to live with a mean man with a cloud of smoke for a head who feeds them gum for lunch, makes them do hard labour and pays the other workers only in coupons. Count Olaf is nowhere to be found. This book beats Harry Potter by a mile! 5. Not for Kids Who Scare Really Easily!
