( Details ) ISBN: 0375509119 Published: January 2003 | Published by Modern Library From the Publisher When first published in 1903, W.E.B. Du Bois’s The Souls of Black Folk struck like a thunderclap, quickly establishing itself as a work that wholly redefined the history of the black experience in America, introducing the now famous “problem of the color line.” In decades since, its stature has only grown, and today it ranks as one of the most influential and resonant works in the history of American thought. This centennial edition contains a landmark Introduction by historian David Levering Lewis that brilliantly demonstrates how The Souls of Black Folk remains indispensable not only to an understanding of the history of race and democracy in America but to considerations of the future of racial and cultural comity in the twenty-first century. About the Author W.E.B. Du Bois (1868–1963), writer, civil rights activist, scholar, and editor, is one of the most significant intellectuals in American history. A founding member of the NAACP, editor for many years of The Crisis and three other journals, and author of seventeen books, his writings, speeches, and public debates brought fundamental changes to American race relations. David Levering Lewis is Martin Luther King, Jr., University Professor in the department of history at Rutgers University. He won Pulitzer prizes for both volumes of his landmark biography of W.E.B. Du Bois, along with many other awards, including the Bancroft and Parkman prizes. He lives in Manhattan. Review Quotes “One hundred years after publication, there is in the entire body of social criticism still no more than a handful of meditations on the promise and failings of democracy in America to rival William Edward Burghardt Du Bois’s extraordinary collection of fourteen essays.” —from the Introduction by David Levering Lewis Info Desk iREWARDS Program About Our Company Affiliate Opportunities Careers Contact Us Corporate Sales Gift Certificates Privacy Policy Shipping Rates Store Locations Wish List chapters.indigo.ca: books Shopping Bag | Account Centre | Wish List | Help iREWARDS Program | Corporate Sales | Store Locations All Products Books DVD Video Gifts Books Advanced Search Search Tips About this Book From the Publisher About the Author Read from the Book Review Quotes Social Science Anthropology Archaeology Crimes and Criminals Cultural Studies Demography Disability Discrimination and Race Relations Folklore and Mythology Gender Studies Gerontology Human Geography Human Services Methodology Philanthropy and Charity Pornography Social Work Sociology Statistics Volunteer Work Browse Home Page View all Categories Books - Home and Garden › Music - Jazz Instrument › Chapters For Him - Gadgets & Office › Books - Food and Drink › Music - Instrumental › Chapters For Him - Travel › Music - International › Books - Sports › Chapters Books - Art and Architecture › Video - Sports & Fitness › Books - Social and Cultural Studies › Music - General › DVD - Horror & Suspense › Video - Foreign Films › Jewellery - Necklaces › Books - Reference and Language › Jewellery - Earrings › Books - Food and Drink › Books - Family and Relationships › Books - Science and Nature › Indigobooks • Chaptersbooks • Chapters Book Store Ottawa • Chapters Pointe Claire • Chapters Bookstore Online • Chapters Pointe Claire • Chapters Library • Chapters Book Store Canada • Chapters Pointe Claire • Chapters Indogo • Chapters Pointe Claire • Chapters Book Store • Chapters Online Sale • Chapters Indigo Books Canada • Chapters Indigio • Chapters Sudbury • Chapters Kelowna • Chapters Kelowna • Chapters Book Store • www.Chapters.Indigo.ca • Chapters Book Store • Chapters Library • Chapters Indigo Coupon • Chapters Book Store Ottawa • Indigobooks • Chapters: Chapters-Indigo Stores Chapters-Indigo Website

Chapters Inc. was formed following the merger of Coles and SmithBooks, then Canada’s two largest bookstore chains. In 1994, Canadian General Capital and Pathfinder Capital purchased SmithBooks from Federal Industries, and later that year acquired Coles from Southam Inc. The strategy was to build a strong base company and use its financial strength to invest in the development of large format book superstores.

In April 1995, the merger of SmithBooks and Coles was finalized, and in November 1995, the new company, Chapters Inc. opened its first two book superstores and from there grew to become the largest book retailer in Canada, operating bookstores in all provinces, under the names Chapters, Coles, SmithBooks, and World's Biggest Bookstore.
