( Details ) Starring: Elijah Wood , Ian McKellen Director: Peter Jackson Video Release: November 2002 | Theatrical Release: 2001 Runtime: 208 Rating: PG-13 (MPAA) Released by Alliance Atlantis | UPC: 794043554926 chapters.indigo Review It's so nice to see a film that lives up to its hype -- as epic and impressive as the book upon which it is based. The daunting task of putting J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy classic on film was taken up with great enthusiasm and talent by Kiwi filmmaker Peter Jackson, and the result is magnificent. The challenge was to impress the heck out of devotees of the books without leaving non-readers scratching their heads and Jackson has done just that, with help from a monumentally talented crew of artistic directors, costume designers and technicians and a wonderfully-chosen cast. Elijah Wood is brave and tortured as Frodo Baggins and the other hobbits -- especially the pitch-perfect Sam (Sean Astin) -- are marvelous. Viggo Mortensen is beguiling as Strider/Aragorn, Orlando Bloom is both luminous and steely as the elf prince Legolas, and Sean Bean is brilliant as the shady Boromir. Sir Ian McKellen deserves special notice (like, say, an Oscar nomination) for his turn as the wizard Gandalf and even Liv Tyler, whom we expected to resent, plays the Elvish princess Arwen with grace and skill. The New Zealand locations are magical, from the rolling green hills of the Shire to the dreamy refuge of Rivendell to the ethereal forests of Lothlorien. The myth was brought to life in every way and good on Jackson for being brave and smart enough to complete all three films at once, preserving the artistic integrity of the project and the strength of the wonderful performances. The investment in time and money will, no doubt, be richly rewarded. Editorial Notes DVD features include: DISCS 1-2: The Feature • Unique version of the epic adventure with over 30 minutes of never-before-seen footage incorporated into the film and new music scored by Howard Shore • Four feature-length audio commentaries by director and writers, the design team, the production team, and the cast featuring more than 30 participants DISCS 3-4: The Appendices • Two discs with hours of original content including multiple documentaries and design/photo galleries with thousands of images to give viewers an in-depth behind-the-scenes look at The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring DISC 3: "From Book to Vision": • Adapting the book into a screenplay & planning the film • Designing and building Middle-earth • Storyboards to pre-visualization • Weta Workshop visit: An up-close look at the weapons, armor, creatures, and miniatures from the film • An interactive map of Middle-earth tracing the journey of the Fellowship • An interactive map of New Zealand highlighting the location scouting process • Galleries of art and slideshows with commentaries by the artists • Guided tour of the wardrobe department • Footage from early meetings, moving storyboards, and pre-visualization reels DISC 4: "From Vision to Reality": • Bringing the characters to life • A day in the life of a hobbit • Principal photography: Stories from the set • Scale: Creating the illusion of size • Galleries of behind-the-scenes photographs and personal cast photos • Editorial and visual effects multi-angle progressions • Sound design demonstration Notes Other elves include Arwen (Liv Tyler), Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), and Eldrond (Hugo Weaving), but they are not part of the core band of nine who set out to destroy the ring at Mount Doom. Chapters Inc. was formed following the merger of Coles and SmithBooks, then Canada’s two largest bookstore chains. In 1994, Canadian General Capital and Pathfinder Capital purchased SmithBooks from Federal Industries, and later that year acquired Coles from Southam Inc. The strategy was to build a strong base company and use its financial strength to invest in the development of large format book superstores.

In April 1995, the merger of SmithBooks and Coles was finalized, and in November 1995, the new company, Chapters Inc. opened its first two book superstores and from there grew to become the largest book retailer in Canada, operating bookstores in all provinces, under the names Chapters, Coles, SmithBooks, and World's Biggest Bookstore.
