Others discuss how difficult it was running the family farm, feeding and clothing a large brood or performing back-breaking tasks in the mines. Without question, the older generations have countless stories about the many sacrifices they made to ensure comfort and security for the following generations. How many grandchildren can say their great-grandmother piloted a mass suicide? Such is the case in Dionne Brand's hard-hitting At the Full and Change of the Moon , a tale in which several generations try to live with the knowledge their Trinidadian great-grandmother, Marie Ursule, led a group of slaves to their deaths in revolt to the slave trade. From the Publisher In 1824, on the island of Trinidad, Marie Ursule, queen of a secret society of militant slaves, plots a mass suicide - a quiet, passionate act of revolt. But she cannot bring herself to kill her small daughter, Bola, whom she smuggles away in the early dawn light. As Bola’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren spill out across the world to America, Canada and Europe, they find their lives both haunted and vindicated by the dreams and passions of their defiant ancestor. The interconnected stories of six generations of Marie Ursule’s descendants form a lush, beguiling and beautifully told history of dispossession, and bring this Governor General’s Award-winning writer into the front rank of the world’s novelists. About the Author Dionne Brand won the Governor General’s Award for Poetry and the Trillium Award in 1997 for Land to Light On . Her novel In Another Place, Not Here was shortlisted for the Chapters/ Books in Canada First Novel Award and the Trillium Award, and was published in the US and the UK to great acclaim. Dionne Brand lives in Toronto. Review Quotes "One of the essential works of our times...Rich, elegiac...nothing short of brilliant." — The Globe and Mail "Sensuous...wildly lyrical...wonderful...Extremely impressive in the range of its characters and situations...It is an unforgettable world [that] pierces the imagination." — The Toronto Star "Rich and vibrant...Dionne Brand continues to wrestle with her restless poetics in an effort to forge a language bold enough for the big ideas she likes to cram into her fiction...Sensuous, sometimes hallucinatory prose...Brand’s is a voice both brave and beautiful." — NOW "Extraordinary...Dionne Brand...exults in the power of language and deploys it to lure us from harsh reality to metaphysical heights...The prose, so close to poetry, [is] almost musical." — National Post "…tough, unflinching…hauntingly beautiful. The novel creates a rich world…" --Philip Marchand, the Toronto Star "Brand draws us into a fierce, incendiary plantation world, a lush, dense revolutionary zone…through the sheer force of her imagination wills an obscured history back to life . " --The Montreal Gazette (4/3/99) "…a brilliant work. Like all her writing, Brand’s work here is dense, beautiful and sure, but what makes this work even bigger again is her evocation of an intricately connected past and present." -- Georgia Straight ( 8/8/99) "… At the Full and Change of the Moon is simply a beautiful, frightening and engaging book...[A] powerful novel." -- Books in Canada (30/7/99) Info Desk iREWARDS Program About Our Company Affiliate Opportunities Careers Contact Us Corporate Sales Gift Certificates Privacy Policy Shipping Rates Store Locations Wish List chapters.indigo.ca: books Shopping Bag | Account Centre | Wish List | Help iREWARDS Program | Corporate Sales | Store Locations All Products Books DVD Video Gifts Books Advanced Search Search Tips About this Book chapters.indigo Review From the Publisher About the Author Review Quotes Browse Books Art and Architecture Audiobooks Biography & Memoir Business and Finance Children's Books Computers Entertainment Family and Relationships Fiction and Literature Food and Drink Health and Well Being History Home and Garden Mystery and Suspense Reference and Language Religion and Spirituality Romance Science and Nature Science Fiction and Fantasy Social and Cultural Studies Sports Travel Coles Notes Books - Business and Finance › DVD - Science Fiction & Fantasy › Music - Shows/Movies › Books - History › Music - R&B/Soul › Books - Health and Well Being › DVD - Horror & Suspense › Books - Biography & Memoir › Books - Food and Drink › Books - Reference and Language › Music - International › Music - Country › Chapters DVD - Action & Adventure › Chapters Occasions - Housewarming › Books - Business and Finance › Books - Mystery and Suspense › Music - Comedy › Music - Electronic › Chapters Occasions - Gift Baskets › Chapters for Kids - Plush › Chapters In Montreal • Indigo Chapters Ca • Chapters Book Store • Canadian Stores • www.Chapters Indigo • Chapters Indigo Online • Chapters Victoria BC • www.Chapters Indigo • Chapters Indigo Ca Coupons • Chapters Indigo Ca Wptelus • Chapters Indigio • Chapters Book Shop • Chapters Discounts • Chapters In Montreal • Chapters Bookstore Locations • Chapters Indigo Toronto • Shop Canada • Chapters Indigio • Indigo Chapters • Chapters Book Store Ottawa • Chapters Indigio • Indigo • Chapters Indigo Online • Canadian Jewellery Stores • Indigo Bookstore • Chapters: Chapters-Indigo Stores Chapters-Indigo Website

Indigo Books & Music Inc

Indigo Books & Music Inc. was created in 1996, and opened the first Indigo store, called Indigo Books Music & more, in Burlington, Ontario on September 4, 1997. By 2000, the chain had expanded to 14 locations across Canada. Indigo Books & Music was the first Canadian book retail chain to add music, gifts and licensed cafes to their distinctive store locations, making shopping a real social event, a leisurely experience that could comfortably and enjoyably stretch over hours. Chapters Inc. was formed following the merger of Coles and SmithBooks, then Canada’s two largest bookstore chains. In 1994, Canadian General Capital and Pathfinder Capital purchased SmithBooks from Federal Industries, and later that year acquired Coles from Southam Inc. The strategy was to build a strong base company and use its financial strength to invest in the development of large format book superstores.

In April 1995, the merger of SmithBooks and Coles was finalized, and in November 1995, the new company, Chapters Inc. opened its first two book superstores and from there grew to become the largest book retailer in Canada, operating bookstores in all provinces, under the names Chapters, Coles, SmithBooks, and World's Biggest Bookstore.
