You are in the DVD warehouse Leading Ladies...Jodie Foster Jodie Foster began her film career from a very young age, thrown into appearing in commercials and small movie parts by her mother who used to take her and her siblings along to various auditions. She got her first major role as pre teen prostitute Iris in Taxi Driver in 1975 at the tender age of 13. After being stalked by a fan of the movie that later attempted a copycat style assassination of the President, Foster shunned the media and stopped answering fan mail. In 1988 she won an Oscar for her performance as a rape victim in The Accused , but her most well known and perhaps best performance to date has to be as Clarice Starling in Silence of the Lambs for which she won a Best Actress Oscar, one of the most chilling movies of the 90s and absolutely essential to any DVD collection. Leading Ladies... ...Demi Moore ...Sharon Stone ...Cameron Diaz ...Drew Barrymore ...Marilyn Monroe ...Julia Roberts ...Sigourney Weaver ...Nicole Kidman The Silence of the Lambs Being the top student at the FBI training academy lands Clarice Starling ( Foster ) a special assignment. The FBI are investigating serial killer Buffalo Bill and have asked Clarice to visit the notorious Dr. Hannibal Lector ( Anthony Hopkins ) in prison as he may be able to offer some useful insight into the psyche of Buffalo Bill. In return for sharing the information he has on Buffalo Bill, Lector insists that Clarice share details of her past, and that he gets moved to a more comfortable prison. With help from Lector and using her own ingenuity she gets closer to capturing Buffalo Bill but then Lector escapes… Contact Ellie ( Foster ) works with a group of scientific researchers who monitor radio waves coming from space hoping to pick up signals from other life forms. When their dreams are answered and they receive a strange signal, Ellis decodes it and it turns out to the design for space ship. White House advisor David Drumlin ( Tom Skerrit ) steps in and takes credit for the discovery but Ellie gets moral support from Palmer Joss ( Matthew McConaughey ) and eventually gets to man the space ship that is built from funding by eccentric millionaire S.R. Hadden ( John Hurt ), and embarks on a journey to another world. Sommersby Foster plays Laurel in this post civil war drama set in 19th Century Tennessee, who is now engaged to Orin ( Bill Pullman ) believing her husband Sommersby ( Richard Gere ) to have been killed in the war. When Sommersby returns to his farm much changed, Laurel calls off her engagement and gets to know her husband again discovering that the cruel man she married has become a caring, sensitive and loving husband and father. Orin becomes suspicious that the man posing as Sommersby is in fact an imposter, a fear secretly shared by Laurel, and when Sommersby is accused of a drunken murder from years before the truth will surely come out in court… Maverick A comedy Western in which con man Bret Maverick ( Mel Gibson ) comes up with a scam to cheat his way to victory in a big poker game. Trying to raise his stake for the big game by ripping off some small time players, he upsets the seemingly sweet and innocent Annabelle ( Jodie Foster ) and Angel ( Alfred Molina ). Marshall Cooper ( James Garner ) then gets involved and with all these people on his case Maverick still has to raise his stake and get to the big poker game to con his way to his fortune. Little Man Tate Jodie Foster starred in and directed this movie about a child genius Fred ( Adam Hann-Byrd ) who is so bright he finds relating to children his own age difficult. His mother Dede ( Foster ) is a cocktail waitress who is nervous about Fred’s abilities preventing him from being ‘normal’. This anxiety increases when Fred is invited by psychologist Jane ( Dianne West ) to spend the summer at a camp for gifted children, which threatens Dede’s and Fred’s relationship forever. The Accused This harrowing account of a gang rape is based on a true story. Jodie Foster stars as Sarah, a free living and party going waitress who, after a fight with her boyfriend, goes to a local bar to cool off. The evening quickly turns nasty and Sarah finds herself on top of the pinball machine being gang raped by some locals with lots of others cheering the ringleaders on. When Sarah’s attorney Kathryn Murphy ( Kelly McGillis ) plea bargains a resolution Sarah feels like she has been sold out and eventually Kathryn agrees to go after the onlookers of the rape on the basis of criminal solicitation. Taxi Driver Travis Bickle ( Robert De Niro ) is a late night New York cabby on the brink of self-destruction. Unable to form relationships with anyone, Bickle eventually lands a date with presidential campaign worker Betsy ( Cybil Shepherd ), but ruins his chances when he naively takes her to see a porn film. When this misguided attempt at romance fails, and his efforts to convince teen hooker Iris ( Jodie Foster ) to return to her parents fail, Bickle is tipped over the edge and attempts to rid the streets of the ‘scum’ forever. The performance earned Foster an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress. The Hotel New Hampshire This is the tale of a very strange and eccentric family who travel around the world, eventually ending up at the Hotel New Hampshire in Vienna. The children of the family are the main focus for the film with Jodie Foster playing the eldest daughter Franny who has become obsessed with one of the men who gang raped her, and has a sexual attraction to her brother John ( Rob Lowe ) which turns out to be mutual.
