Our Review A truly momentous moment in indie music as well as a landmark release for the Smiths themselves, 'The Queen Is Dead' truly cemented the band's reputation as one of the most important of the decade. Their anti-glamour stance had become a new glamour in itself for their huge following, all sporting implausibly high quiffs and National Health specs as they fawned at the feet of their bedsit idol, Stephen Morrissey. Their third album, 'The Queen Is Dead', was a definite progression from its predecessor, 'Meat Is Murder', taking Morrissey's inherently witty lyricism to new heights, most notably on the title track and 'Frankly Mr Shankly'. Johnny Marr was also treading new ground with his most forceful composition to date, a mix of out-and-out riff-mongering and his most tender ballads yet in songs like 'I Know It's Over' and 'There Is A Light' For an album from the indie stable to attract so much media interest, far and beyond the inkie music press into detailed broadsheet analysis, was unheard of and pretty much unrepeated since. The timing of its release is part of the success of the record - the mid-'80s were a bloated and lazy time for the English music scene, so The Smiths' ironic tributes to its traditions and values were a welcome relief from the largely uninspired alternative music culture whose mainstays were a faux goth movement that was definitely on the way out by that time. No other band from the mid-'80s indie charts would attract the attentions of Melvyn Bragg on their disbandment, and it's safe to say most wouldn't make it to the end of the CD in 2001.
