Our Review The Stone Roses were so comfortable in their own talents that they looked like under-achieving geniuses. But this album is no under-achievement - it is a classic of its generation. This debut album is so confident that the love & anger and optimism & pessimism are never forced, but allowed to have room and grow on repeated listens. The Roses' cool, detached arrogance which was so important was personified by Ian Brown's nonchalant vocals - he can claim 'I Am the Resurrection' and lay back, as if there were no room for debate. But the key to The Stone Roses is John Squire's layers of simple, exceedingly catchy hooks and how the rhythm section of Reni and Mani always imply dance rhythms without overtly going into the disco. Squire's riffs are bright and catchy, recalling the British Invasion while suggesting the future with their phased, echoey effects. The repercussions of The Stone Roses achievement could be heard throughout the '90s, with every Indie band acknowledging its influence - Oasis included.
